We were founded on 1 July 2001 as RFI - Rete Ferroviaria Italiana SpA, in response to the need to separate the network manager from the provider of transport services. We are responsible for keeping the railway infrastructure in full working order, allowing over 9000 passenger trains and tons of freight to run on them every day in complete safety.
As of 2022, we are the lead company of the FS Italiane Group’s Infrastructure Hub, which also includes Anas, Italferr and Ferrovie Sud Est. The Hub manages 160 billion euro in investments from today to 2031 (with 110 billion for railways and 50 billion for roads), 16,800 kilometres of railway lines (counting over 1,600 tunnels, 23,000 bridges and viaducts and 2,200 stations) plus 32,000 kilometres of roads (with over 2,000 tunnels, 18,000 bridges and viaducts and 1,200 roadman’s houses). The aim is to upgrade and integrate rail and road infrastructure, rendering them both more modern, resilient, interconnected and accessible to all. This synergy must be there right from the planning phase of the works, defining and specialising the roles of the various infrastructure, but also in those for the design, technological development and maintenance.
We ensure the different areas of the country are connected, safely managing railway travel and keeping infrastructure with its complex network of lines and stations in full working order. Every day, we offer accessible services for all types of passenger and contribute to the sustainable development of our country and its mobility system.
We have adopted a strong corporate governance system to ensure responsible and transparent management of our activities, based on a corporate culture founded on integrity and ethics, which enables us to act effectively and achieve our goals while respecting our values and the expectations of our stakeholders.
We contribute to the sustainable development and attractiveness of the country, focusing on meeting the mobility needs of people and logistics to increase the connectivity and integration of the Italian economy.
We manage the railway network and make investments while respecting the environment and complying with the highest safety standards, through an open and transparent dialogue with stakeholders, to create shared value for the community.
As national railway infrastructure manager, we implement the plans and investments defined with the government for the development and maintenance of the network, governed through Programme Contracts.
At the heart of the planning, updating and communication process of the action plans is constant dialogue with public institutions and stakeholders, particularly Railway Undertakings, regional authorities, local bodies and other relevant parties.
