RFI's energy consumption is largely attributable to the use of electricity for its own purposes (in particular for signaling systems, station lighting and other assets, etc.) followed by diesel - used mainly for carrying out the navigation aimed at guaranteeing the territorial continuity of railway transport services - and by methane for heating workplaces.

Details of energy sources used by RFI by type

  • electricity, mainly used for signalling, lighting towers, station and office lighting, terminal operations, railway traction for RFI uses (e.g. running diagnostic trains);
  • diesel used for the operation of railway transport and traction, and for heating, powering motor vehicles, and work equipment and vehicles;
  • natural gas used for heating and carrying out industrial activities;
  • district heating, petrol, LPG used for heating and fuelling motor vehicle/cars.

These consumption contributes to the production of approximately 95% of RFI's CO₂eq emissions which total around 282 thousand tons in 2023 (the remaining  share is attributable to other types of emission sources, including mainly fluorinated gases).

With regard to electricity alone, in 2023 we supplied about 6.3 TWh of energy, placing us among the largest purchasers on the Italian electricity market (approximately 2% of national consumption). Specifically, in 2023 we purchased:

  • for electrical traction 5.78 TWh on the Electricity Exchange, through the GSE (Energy Services Operator), equal to 92% of the total purchased;
  • for the operation of the RFI terminals 0.48 TWh, of which 0.28 TWh on the Power Exchange through the GSE equal to 4.4% of the total purchased, and 0.2 TWh through a supply contract equal to 3.2% of the total purchased.
EE managed by RFI by destination 2023

The electricity purchased on the Power Stock Exchange is intended for both "internal uses" and railway traction, and reflects the composition of the energy sources (renewable/non-renewable) of the national energy mix. The EE acquired through a market supply contract, however, is entirely covered by Guarantees of Origin (GO). Overall in 2023 RFI used electricity covered by GO equal to 42% of total consumption for "internal uses".
