We mainly use electricity, followed by diesel fuel, which is mainly used for railway services to ensure the territorial continuity of railway transport services, and natural gas for heating workplaces.

Details of energy sources used by RFI by type

  • electricity, mainly used for signalling, lighting towers, station and office lighting, terminal operations, railway traction for RFI uses (e.g. running diagnostic trains);
  • diesel used for the operation of railway transport and traction, and for heating, powering motor vehicles, and work equipment and vehicles;
  • natural gas used for heating and carrying out industrial activities;
  • district heating, petrol, LPG used for heating and fuelling motor vehicle/cars.

With regard to electricity alone, in 2022 we supplied about 6.1 TWh of energy, placing us among the largest purchasers on the Italian electricity market (approximately 2% of national consumption). Specifically, in 2022 we purchased:

  • for electrical traction to be supplied to the trains of the Railway Undertakings operating on the National Railway Infrastructure 5.63 TWh on the Electricity Exchange, through the GSE (Energy Services Operator), equal to 92% of the total purchased;
  • for the operation of the RFI terminals 0.47 TWh, of which 0.34 TWh on the Power Exchange through the GSE equal to 6% of the total purchased, and 0.13 TWh through a supply contract equal to 2% of the total purchased.

Electricity supplied also differs according to how it is purchased:

  • the quantity purchased on the Power Stock Exchange, both for domestic use and for rail traction, has the same structure as the national energy mix
  • electricity acquired through a market supply contract, on the other hand, is fully substantiated by appropriate Guarantees of Origin as a result of a specific contractual addendum with which RFI has signed a “Green Option” certifying that the purchased electricity comes from renewable energy sources (RES). Furthermore, in 2022, the share of electricity for internal use covered by the GO was raised to 200 GWh/year (equal to 40% of RFI's total needs) due to the increase in the supply of green energy.
